What We Believe
What we believe determines how we live. As Christ followers, we strive to embody all that Jesus taught and commanded. Below is an emphasis on what we believe as followers of Christ. For a more detailed expression of our beliefs, please view the ECO Essential Tenets.
What We Believe
What we believe about humanity and the need for salvation
We recognize that humanity is created in the image of God, but because of our sin, we are lost, in need of forgiveness, and subject to death.
To rescue us from sin and reveal the fullness of His love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ. Through Jesus' atoning death on the cross and physical resurrection, we are forgiven, reconciled with God, and recipients of eternal life.
As those reconciled with God, the church is called to live under the lordship of Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and sent into the world to embody the love of God in word and deed.
What we believe about Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God (John 8:42, 53). We affirm the mystery of Christ's nature: He is both fully God and fully human. In His divinity, He is the Son of God, the second member of the Trinity, of one substance with the Father and the Holy Spirit. In His humanity, He is like us in every way but sin, of one substance with us, having both a human soul and a human body. As to His divinity, He is eternally begotten of the Father; as to His humanity, He is born of the virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit. As to His divinity, His glory fills heaven and earth; as to His humanity, His glory is shown in the form of a suffering servant, most clearly when He is lifted up on the cross in our place (ECO Essential Tenets).
What we believe about the Bible
We affirm that the Old and New Testaments of the Bible are inspired by God and authoritative to guide the behavior of God's people in matters of faith and practice. We also affirm the primacy of the Scriptures over all other creeds, which exist to reflect the teachings and affirmations of the Bible in specific times and situations.
In everything, we take a posture of humility and rely on God's Spirit to guide us. Our commitment to the authority of God's Word and the uniqueness of Jesus compels us not to pass judgment, but to preach and live the gospel in loving relationships, with urgency and respect for all.
